About

Solving global challenges takes genuine collaboration, which is why the centre brings together researchers, educators and innovators from across the 天涯社区.

By drawing on diverse expertise, we turn knowledge into real-world impact. The centre also serves as a think tank, a place where government and partners can engage directly with experts and be met with forward-thinking, practical solutions.

With more than 60 researchers already involved, we’re driving innovation, policy and workforce development — together.

Already, the U of A is making hydrogen work in the real world:

  • Developing a revolutionary catalyst that allows the production of pure hydrogen from water
  • Developing blue hydrogen production technology using methane pyrolysis
  • Powering heavy industry and transportation with hydrogen-diesel hybrid engines
  • Producing hydrogen through solar-driven water splitting using abundant materials
  • Confirming Alberta’s salt caverns as a solution for large-scale hydrogen storage
  • Shaping Alberta’s Hydrogen Roadmap with real-world, policy-informing modelling tools
  • Partnering with Indigenous communities, industry and government to co-create solutions across the hydrogen value chain

The centre is our next step to integrate, accelerate and scale this momentum.

Meet the centre’s director

Amit Kumar

Amit Kumar

An international expert in energy systems and policy and a Canada Research Chair, Kumar has advised both provincial and federal governments on hydrogen strategies. As director, he leads one of North America’s largest and most diverse hydrogen research teams.

With Kumar at the helm, this is more than a research centre — it’s a driving force behind Canada’s hydrogen future.

Hydrogen is not just an energy carrier; it's a catalyst for a sustainable future, enabling economies worldwide to significantly reduce their carbon footprints and embrace better energy solutions.
